Overseas Income – Tax Return

If you earn income from overseas sources, such as working abroad, or from rental properties overseas or other investments, then you need to declare it as part of your tax return and file an IR3.

I spent my uni holidays working in Sydney as a lifeguard on Bondi Beach. This means I technically have overseas income to declare by filing an IR3 return. This is the easiest way I have found of doing it online.

What you will need:

  1. A scanned copy of your driver licence, or (if you don’t have a licence) a scanned copy of the picture page of your passport. It is an IRD requirement that we correctly identify you.
  2. Your IRD number.
  3. Arrival and departure dates from NZ (if applicable).

What you need to know:

How do I know if I have to declare my overseas income?
If you have been working overseas, it all depends on your tax residency (not to be mistaken for your general residency). Our application form asks some really simple questions to help us determine whether or not you are required to declare the overseas income. If not, you may still need to file an IR3 return, but the fee will be much lower.
If you have been in New Zealand, receiving income from overseas (and you don’t have a tax exemption on your overseas income), then it is most likely that you are required to declare the income, so you should fill out our online form.

Why do I have to declare my overseas income?
As a tax resident of New Zealand, you are required by law to declare all of your worldwide income. Any income that the IRD don’t know about, they need to know about. This is to ensure that you paid the right amount of tax by New Zealand standards. The only way to declare the income is on an IR3 tax return.

What is involved?
You need to fill out a simple online form, providing information about the length of time you were away (if you were away), the amount of income received and the amount of tax paid (if any). We do the rest. We convert the income received and tax paid to NZD, calculate the tax obligation on this income and enter the necessary figures onto your IR3 return.

What does this service cost?
Our set fee per tax return is just $175 (including GST).
